teve Edwards completed the 2017 London Marathon in 3:14, a remarkable time compared to the majority of marathon runners. But what is truly remarkable, Steve has consistently run a sub 3:30 marathon 700 times; he has completed over 778 marathons since he first started in the 1980s when he was 18, that's 1 marathon every 14 days for the last 30 years. Steve has also won 55 marathons, the second-most by any British athlete and his medal haul leaves me speechless, further proof of his achievements if one was needed.
The 54 year-old, from Moreton In Marsh, began running in 1981, when he was 18. He saw a poster advertising the Coventry Marathon at work and decided to give it a go – despite it being just six weeks away and he's not stopped running since.
But what of the man inside the machine? Who is he? What drives him to race a competitive marathon so frequently?
Steve Edwards was born with a deformed left hand and was bullied throughout his childhood as a result. He also has a congenital blood disorder that directly compromises athleticism.
“Running has helped me to become more confident and a stronger person. “I have written a book about running and I hope it will inspire others to take up the sport.
“I want it to inspire people and show them what they can achieve if they work hard.”
But for now, he's enjoying his 22nd sub 3:30 London Marathon, while setting his sights on his next monumental world record goal, 1000 sub 3:30 marathons, I think he just might do it!
